Dirt Dungeon development diary 1: An adventure begins.

"The giants have fallen, but life endures on. Those who creepeth and crawleth have taken charge, founding colonies that are in a perpetual state of birth and death. The world is a dangerous place for the lowly insect, but together they can overcome. "

If you're not familiar with a TTRPG it is a role playing game where players control characters through a woven narrative which is guided by a game master. The most famous example of a TTRPG is perhaps Dungeons and Dragons which has been continually popular since its inception in the 70s.

Anyway to the point, I'm creating my own TTRPG which has grew from my small conk comic I created. Whilst the comic was fun, it didn't quite scratch the itch I was looking for. I wanted to explore the world that the little hero Conk lived in, how do these bugs experience their lives and how do their societies work? I came to the conclusion that a TTRPG would be a great foundation for this, not only can I weave the narrative of these lands through illustration and writing, but with this game format new stories can be forged by anyone, leading to an ever evolving world.

A wandering adventurer faces a fearsome foe.

At this moment I am busy crafting a ruleset inbetween all my other work and slowly putting together some artwork that will be included in the book. So far I have run one playtest of an early version of the game which I'd say was a success but it is evident the ruleset still needs a number of tweaks. I'm unsure how long exactly this will take until there is a full version, but so far it's been an extremely fun process to create a ruleset that both is fun and easy to play whilst expanding the world which the RPG is set in.

My end goal for this personal project is to have a fun playable game contained within a fully illustrated tome. I hope to really get this out into the world and when completed will look at ways to do that through attending conventions and using the voice of the internet.

I want this to be really accessible for people who want to give it a go, so my current plan is to have a downloadable version of the game that will either be free or a pay what you want basis and then a fully printed physical book that can be purchased. Of course this is a while off yet, but I'm really excited to get this out as soon as I can.

I'll be doing more of these development diaries as I go on talking about various aspects of the game and its narrative as it progresses as a sort of log for myself. So if you're interested stay tuned!
